Should Marijuana (Cannabis) be legal?

Marijuana has been a hot topic over the years. Should it be legal or illegal? This seems to be the main question.

Cannabis has become legal in 28 states and Washington DC for medical marijuana use or for recreational along with medical. Research has shown that the use of Marijuana can be very beneficial for people. Benefits include: controlling seizures, decrease anxiety, ease pain, help with nausea, etc...
All of these are amazing benefits!! Marijuana is a great option for chemo patients who may be experiencing pain and nausea. There are also people who enjoy the use of Marijuana for recreational purposes. Reasons for recreational use may include: just to relax or to help them wind down from such a stressful day.

Many people in the United States may be nervous about legalizing a Marijuana because it is a drug, but alcohol is legal which also alters a persons mental state maybe even more than Marijuana. Therefore, we as a whole need to look hard at the benefits of Marijuana at least for medical purposes. So many people can gain the positive affects of using Cannabis.

Another thing we need to think about is even though Marijuana may be illegal in a state, that does not mean people are not purchasing it. The government might as well legalize the use of Cannabis (at least medically) and tax it. More than half of drug busts are for Marijuana! Another positive effect that the legalization of Cannabis would have is it would clear out space in jails, so the issues with overcrowding would be closer to being resolved.

What about the negative effects?

Marijuana has been considered to be a very dangerous drug and yes it does have negative side effects but what doesn’t these days if not consumed in a moderate way? For example caffeine, too much of it can cause headaches, insomnia, nervousness and one can get addicted to it but drinking less than 400 mg can just be considered a healthy consumption level. Sugar, most people in their lifetime don’t realize that they can go a couple of hours without eating sugar which can over time cause diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome but controlling these sugar cravings wouldn’t be as harmful as it could be. Painkillers, such as Vicodin, OxyContin, and Percocet even Ritalin which is a prescription for people with ADD or Antidepressants these are common medication that a large percentage of the population are addicted too but our country has created a system that controls the access to these prescriptions and can easily tell if one is abusing its access. So yes I agree with Hannah that Marijuana should be legalized and agree that it can bring significant benefits to our economy and reduce crime rates.

On March 29th, Hannah Chapman made a post titled Should Marijuana (Cannabis) be Legal that I personally agree with; the points she made in her argument are all reasonable and make sense. I haven't seen marijuana cause harm or have seen anyone high on it be a nuisance- if anything I've seen positive effects in those who use it. I think that the government has been trying to profit off of drug busts, imprisonment, and fining of those in possession of marijuana, and because of that, they have tried to prevent the legalization of marijuana. Now, as the population has adjusted to where marijuana is an acceptable norm, and is now angered that addictive drugs are being prescribed legally, but marijuana, a organic, harmless "drug" is not, the government is being forced to change their ways. Although I disagree with Hannah's statement about letting the government tax it, I still agree with the rest of her argument about legalizing it. If there's more pros than cons, why don't we allow it?

Thank you guys for commenting on my post.

With regards to Rachel's question. Yes they do have side effects. Here is a website from the government about the negative side effects: https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/drugfacts/marijuana
With most medications there are some sort of side effects. If you have heard a medication commercial when they go over all the side effects it makes me think "why the heck would I take that!" And these are common medications that many people are prescribed for a variety of reasons. Marijuana is natural and if used appropriately for medical purposes can and will be beneficial.
Norma is correct when saying that there are many prescribed medications that Americans become highly addicted to!
Kade, just curious what is your reason for not wanting to allow the government to tax marijuana? In my opinion I believe this is the only way they will allow it. And yes since there are more pros then cons they SHOULD legalize it. However most of the people in high power are very conservative and are not as open as the younger generations are to this topic.
